Job Description – Swim Lesson Instructor

Responsible for monitoring and instructing small group lesson students. Will provide emergency response when appropriate and document such events in a timely manner. Some customer service interactions are possible. Swim lesson instructors must document progress achieved and complete the class evaluation and advancement slip for each student.

Minimum Current Certification Qualifications:   

American Red Cross Lifeguarding – must be renewed every 2 years.

First Aid/CPR/AED – must be renewed every 2 years.

Basic Swim Instructor Certification, recommended.

Reimbursement of certification costs up to $50.00 is available to new and returning instructors with receipt of completion or renewal for the current year and after completion of at least 1 swim lesson session at LRCC.  Print & submit the Expense Report Form (HERE) to LRCC Treasurer. Make a copy of your receipt & form.

Additional Knowledge and Skills:  

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of water safety.
  • Leadership qualities and calm, respectful demeanor.
  • Customer Service experience for positive interactions with club members and guests.
  • Understanding of swimming basics and technique.

General Duties

  • Work all scheduled session lessons, changes MUST be approved by Aquatics Director.
  • Responsible for the safety of all participants; enforce all policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining records of participants and their advancement, timesheets, and information regarding incidents or accidents occurring during lesson time frame. 
  • Attend scheduled on-boarding and in-service meetings.
  • Responsible to the Aquatics Director and the LRCC Board,
  • Responsible for finding your own substitute if unable to work your scheduled shift. Keep in mind that only Swim Lesson Instructors can fill your shift. Both parties must confirm the switch through Sling and it must be approved by the Aquatics Director.

Salary Information:  

  • Minimum hourly pay rate: $16.00/hr (scalable based on years of service &/or job performance)
  • Rainy Day Pay: if your shift is canceled due to weather, you will be paid for 1 hour

Uniforms:

Instructors should wear a one-piece bathing suit during swim lesson shifts, any style or color. 

Sunglasses (wearable in the water) and hats are recommended.

THREE STRIKES POLICY:

To ensure employees are taking their jobs seriously, LRCC has a 3 strikes policy. 

THREE STRIKES = TERMINATION.

Each of the following will result in one strike & will be recorded as a separate incident:

  • using cell phone or texting while on duty (save for your break time)
  • showing up late without notifying the Aquatics Director with verbal, email, or text confirmation
  • failure to notify Aquatics Director of incidents at the pool and failure to log incidents in incident binder

GROUNDS FOR AUTOMATIC TERMINATION:

  • Failure to show up for a shift without advance authorization from the Aquatics Director.
  • Leaving early without notifying and receiving verbal, email, or text confirmation from the Aquatics Director.
  • Falsifying time sheet for yourself or others
  • Arriving to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs
